A girl sits in the twilight, transfixed by the sound of the deafening waves that crash against the sandy white shore and wipe the marred surface of the sand smooth of all evidence that he was there. Overhead the sky is a lustrous midnight blue, and the sea below it reflects an impenetrable darkness.

She traces his name upon the sand--deliberately etching each letter, line for sharply angled line--with a straight, slender finger. His name leaps out at her as clearly as though he had just materialized out of thin air.

She is hunched over with her knees to her chest and her long, wavy auburn hair flowing gracefully down her back, billowing out behind her like a wild cape. The wind gently tugs at her glossy strands, taunting her in cruel amusement, whispering softly in her ear. Her raspy breaths rattle her entire body like an earthquake as the burning, bitter tears pool in the shallow grooves of the letters she so meticulously engraved. She inhales deeply, the smell of the ocean engulfing her in a soft mist, and his name is washed away with the tide as suddenly as he had vanished from her life, gone with the salty sea breeze.

The remnants of yesterday remain strewn about in her mind. The memory of screeching seagulls and scuttling sand crabs, once shockingly vivid, begins slipping out of reach and ebbing into the dark corners of her thoughts. She struggles for a final glimpse of him but only manages to capture his shadowy silhouette against the hazy horizon as a rush of icy water nips at her bare toes. Startled, she cries out, and the water recedes, leaving her to shiver ... leaving her to wonder ...

Names etched into the sands of time reminds me too of how names are etched into the trunks of trees as lovers stand and tell of their love. So too in loving relationships, some are liken unto the sands where someone is thot of and then released into the waters whileas with the tree name carving the relationship may or may not withstand but too in time the letters grown over by bark of time yet to encompass. The relationship as by the sandy shore, may be water earesed and yet time holds the memory, not completely wahed from thots... From time to time as waves crash the shore then too memory is rekindled. .......Your writing is splendid and takes one into the moment of BEing at the shore. Connie

I like getting your comments, Connie. And Goblin, I'm assuming that word "meraviglioso" meant marvelous or something in some language ... Thanks!
